Chin Augmentation

Chin Augmentation: Types and Differences

The chin is a defining feature that shapes facial symmetry, enhances the jawline, and elevates overall aesthetics. Common concerns include:

  • Recessed or Indented Chin: A central dip or uneven contour caused by insufficient bone or muscle support.
  • Asymmetrical or Crooked Chin: Structural imbalance that disrupts facial harmony.
  • Short or Square Chin: Creates a less refined jawline and weakens the facial profile.
  • Retruded Chin: Under-projected from the side view, reducing balance with surrounding features.

These concerns can affect overall facial harmony and personal confidence. A recessed or asymmetrical chin often stands out in both frontal and profile photos, while a short or square chin may create a sharper, less refined look.

Chin Augmentation with silicone: Surgical Approaches

At One Surgery & Aesthetics Clinic, silicone chin augmentation is performed using two refined surgical techniques:

1. Intraoral Technique (Incision Inside the Mouth)

A 1–2 cm incision is made inside the lower lip. A custom-shaped silicone implant is inserted to enhance facial harmony, and the incision is closed with dissolvable sutures.

Benefits:

  • No visible scars; the incision is completely hidden inside the mouth.
  • Normal skincare and facial hygiene can continue immediately.
  • Dissolvable sutures eliminate the need for removal.

Considerations:

  • Extra care is needed when eating during early recovery.
  • Oral hygiene, including brushing, must be performed gently to avoid irritation.

2. External Technique (Incision Under the Chin)

A 2–3 cm incision is placed beneath the chin, allowing the surgeon to insert and position a tailored silicone implant for optimal symmetry.

Benefits:

  • Fewer eating restrictions during recovery; general post-surgical dietary guidelines apply.
  • Requires meticulous post-operative care.
  • Potential for visible scarring if aftercare is not followed properly.
  • Now used less frequently than the intraoral approach.

Key Facts About the External Incision Technique

  • Post-operative wound care can be quite complex.
  • Scarring may occur if proper aftercare is not followed.
  • This procedure has become less popular in recent years.
