What is Upper Eyelid Fat Removal Surgery?

Upper eyelid fat removal surgery is a specialized cosmetic procedure designed to remove excess fat deposits from the upper eyelids. Accumulated fat can cause drooping eyelids, lowered brows, and, in older adults, even obstruct vision.

This procedure not only helps improve vision but also rejuvenates the eyes, making them appear brighter, youthful, and naturally refreshed. It can also be performed alongside double eyelid surgery to create a harmonious and natural-looking eyelid crease after the procedure.

Who is a Candidate for Upper Eyelid Fat Removal Surgery?

Older adults with drooping eyelids due to age, which may affect their field of vision.

Individuals with prominent upper eyelids, where excess fat may cause eyelashes to point inward or irritate the eyes.

People with recessed or uneven eyelid creases, causing asymmetry between the two eyes.

Benefits and Precautions of Upper Eyelid Fat Removal Surgery

Upper eyelid fat removal surgery is a delicate procedure that carries risks similar to other eyelid surgeries. Therefore, it is important to carefully consider both the benefits and precautions and consult with a qualified surgeon to ensure safe and satisfactory results.

Benefits

  • Minimally visible scars – The incision is hidden under the brow and gradually fades, leaving little to no visible mark.
  • Short procedure time – The surgery is efficient and precise.
  • Minimal downtime – Most patients can resume daily activities immediately, with only basic post-operative care such as cleaning the incision and applying cold compresses during the first three days.
  • Long-lasting results – The procedure addresses specific eyelid concerns and can provide improvements lasting 10–20 years.

Precautions

  • Dry eyes – Some patients may experience temporary dryness after surgery.
  • Bruising – Swelling or bruising may occur around the surgical area.
  • Bleeding or infection – There is a risk of minor bleeding, inflammation, or infection if post-operative care is not followed properly.
  • Possible recurrence of drooping eyelids – Over time, the eyelid may droop again depending on individual factors, such as age and skin elasticity.

How to prepare for Upper Eyelid Fat Removal Surgery

Inform your surgeon about any pre-existing medical conditions, medications, or dietary supplements you are taking.

Get adequate rest prior to surgery to prepare your body for recovery.

Avoid alcohol for at least two weeks before the procedure.

Consult your surgeon regarding any specific restrictions or additional preparations based on the type of eye surgery you will undergo.

Post op care

Rest sufficiently, keeping your head elevated for the first 1–2 nights to reduce swelling.

Avoid getting the incision wet until your surgeon advises otherwise.

For minor bleeding, gently dab the area with sterile gauze—do not rub.

Keep the incision clean and take all prescribed medications exactly as instructed.

Apply cold compresses during the first 48 hours after surgery to reduce swelling and discomfort.
